Part TWO..... about the BAD HABITS.
Huh??/
Yes, some bad habits are with all of us for so long now we do not even think of them as habits, but a way of life. (Not a standard of life, that differs from one part of the world to the other).
A long time ago (sigh) in 1967 that was, I just arrived in Australia, a classic story that was too. Young (27) one wife, one child, one small suitcase and not a single dollar. No English language either. The golden days of immigration some call it. Australian Government gave us a temp accommodation, and a welfare income of some $10 per fortnight. So we had some money and decided to go shopping.... You know, standard Coles a New World type of things, some food items and a pair of shoes for our son, just two years old at the time.
There was a mother and her little child just before us in the store and that mother taught me the lesson I will never forget, (and I did not). Her child was asking for an apple. Mother answered :"I do not have money for that you just have to be without it" and as she was still speaking she grabbed a long 10 pack of Kent cigarettes. Now those cigarettes where about 10 times more expensive than a bucket of apples. How comes she said she had no money? It made me think and I am still thinking... Is it "I do not have" or is it "my priority is" kind of thing.
So, you ask, what is that to do with today and this business of ours... Well, besides forcing me to make a resolution then that I will never allow a habit stand in the way of my sons happiness it also made me realize how acquired habit can change peoples lives. I said, If a habit can be acquired it must have a way of discarding it if there was a realisation that it is a habit and a damaging habit for that. Having said that, let me come to the point of today's lesson.
We humans, working class humans, have a habit of SPENDING before SAVING. Saving is impossible on a miserable wage we receive, the life is expensive, we need food, computers and circuses... (adapted from "Bread and Circus, give populace bread and circus and the Rome will have its Pax Romana). Most people today go shopping most of the time even before they receive their salary (long live Credit Cards) and purchase things they just can't be without, cigarettes, clothes of latest fashion (the ones from last year wont fit), new music bit, new car, bigger TV and, oh yes, the modern computer.... do not forget that. And before you know it, they have nothing left for saving... The funny part about it is, we had $10 for two weeks when I came to Australia, and we were kind of short a couple of bucks before the other "pay" come. Today they have a 100 times that much and are still a couple of bucks behind... every week. Do you know why? Its because of 'the habit". The habit to SPEND FIRST and save what is left.
Can you imagine what could result if you decide today that you will save a dollar first and spend what is left? Like, reverse "the habit"? Let me tell you what happened after the child and mother experience I just mentioned in the beginning.
By 1968 I was able to put together about 30 words of English and managed to compose a few articulate sentences so my job gave me a few extra dollars. I had by then just over $25 per week. I took $5 to the bank, paid rent on our house $5, purchased food items $5, and some other things, clothing included another $5. The last $5 I made a repayment on my first car... and "just over" bit served as a fuel supply.
The thing in the bank gave us some major improvements in life as in a few short years it did develop into a nice sum, capable of attracting all sort of finance companies offering us money to "buy now, Pay later."
It grew faster and faster until a "nice saving fund CO" decided to go belly up and take us back to 1968 to start again....
Was it a disaster? Yes it was. Was it the end? No it was not... but a valuable lesson. I trusted the "nice saving fund co" to do everything for me... I had no time to take an interest or care about what they are doing with my money.. I was too busy working to make my regular donation to their wealth. I had readjusted one habit (save last) but in doing that I formed another "trust the experts" which is just as silly as the first one. But I did not know it was a habit, it was something everyone else was doing. I just went with the masses..
The experience made me think really hard (ouch). What can be done....? In 1970 I started selling advertising space on a score card for green bowling. I had a new field there and a new outlook on "what can be done" This JOB was not tied up to any Salary" or fixed income. My income depended on my own efforts. I had to find the door first, I had to knock on the door I had to HOPE the door will open and a nice person will ask "How much?" Then I had to wake up.. Most people were telling me : "Go learn your English first you WOG..." So I was a WOG although to date I never figured why was that supposed to be offensive... I am rather proud to be different but together. So I did listen, I started learning how that system works, I polished my English a bit and went out again. Only this time I was not trying to sell any space. I was asking people to help me learn this new trade.... I said something like: " I am new and my English is not very good but I like to help people and I am learning how to make their business better:"
It had an immediate effect. They listened. I was not selling nor telling, I asked for help. You'll be amazed how many people are willing to help if you ask. No one in my group could understand why are my sales so much better than theirs. Not even the "boss" himself. As a "good salesman" I was told that I am wasting time in advertising.... I should sell insurance, more money, security and all other baloney.... But the training was good. I was with no preconceived idea of the industry, fresh blood ready to be brainwashed and instructed. I learned fast, made a lot of money and after a while it become boring. You see, I had to do it all alone, I was not able to compare notes with others, I had no chance of getting promoted as those with better political skills where always ahead of me. If I asked for help from a fellow salesman I received a look that says : "Yeah, help you to get ahead of me.... In your dreams sucker.... In your dreams.."
Togetherness is not a very respected word in insurance selling industry....
Then Suddenly I remembered that a few months earlier some one said, probably joking but I remembered anyway: "You should be good in Pyramid selling business, You like to work and share with other people...." Of course at the time I had no idea how to sell a pyramid, I did not even know where to find one so I did not think much about it. But not long after that, someone explained to me that what it really is, a rip off and illegal multi level marketing business that some Yanks have started down here." HMM??? Illegal? Is our law stupid or something..? Why do they not stop it if it is illegal? I reasoned that if it is not stopped, it probably was a misunderstanding...
ANOTHER OF FORMED HABITS. They judged the AMWAY system to be illegal before they even looked in the operation of that company, the forefather of all the good and wonderful things yet to come.
I looked and liked the Idea that I can do what I normally do, help others be as good or better than I was and not be slapped because of it. Finally, I was able to put some of my "togetherness" ideas in operation. Apparently, that was ahead of its time so I was not very successful with AMWAY. (Tried Golden Products and Shaklee in the mean time too) You see, They had them "professional meetings" and you are not allowed to talk to the people from other groups and exchange the Ideas. What was once a "me first and only" become now " We first and only". So much for togetherness.... Tried Herbalife, Eureka Foods, Future World and a few others, both local and imported ones... Do not take me wrong here, I made money.... But only just money... I was never able to make a real go of Togetherness. It did bug me for a long while and then - a light.... IF I CAN NOT FIND ONE, WHY NOT MAKE ONE? Yes, why not? I certainly had enough experience in starting other companies, Dr. Ian Brighthope's invention of homeopathic stop smoking remedy, then Harmony Foods, NM insurance (first on MLM) just to mention a few.
I am not much of a copy cat so I started thinking what system to use and how to make it unique. Matrices where on the way out at the time because no one wanted to have something that overspils and make them less money then before... In example, if it was any times any matrix (they are all forced and fixed) lets say 7x7 your number eight person will be placed on your second level. The common practice is to have (example) $10 on level one paid then $8, Then $5 etc... Some even load the very bottom of the matrix, to make you believe that you will get a million if you fill your matrix. I did not like it but because everyone was talking against it, I made my mind to help the matrix re establish its good reputation. One day, a whole bunch of us riding on the bus home had a nice discussion (quite heated) about the very fact that if you help someone you get paid less, not more when one voice out of nowhere said.... Why don't they reverse it so that you get paid more on the second, third, fourth ???? HUH? Did any one think about that... What an Idea!!! As soon as I got home, I started calculating.... If you sponsor one per month who in turn sponsors one per month, you will have your seven on level one, you will have ONE on level seven, but levels three and four will have 35 people there.... EUREKA, MLM is not a pyramid in shape, it is a DIAMOND. (In our reading room there is an article written by me some time ago "MLM, what is it" Have a look to see the diamond.)
Then the question on HOW wide? How deep and what happen if someone actually reaches the depth? Is it necessary or is it important to fill the matrix? Where from here....?
All the questions will be answered one by one in due time and as our lessons continue. But for now, I am going back to the bad habit number one.
SAVING FIRST.
A long time ago, there was a splendid rich and beautiful city called Babylon. It was the center of the then known world and the world super power of the time. And of course it had the same class distinction and man made problems as we have today. There are those with untold riches and those with untold dreams... One day, a group of those with untold dreams decided to ask one of those with untold riches... How did he get there?
"Not hard at all", said Richi Rich." I just take 10% of every profit I make and set it aside as a savings and do business with the rest." 10%? Is that all? Yes that's all. Over a period of time due to the multiplication factor and accumulated interest those 10% turned to be a lot, and I mean a lot more than 10%... What the Richi Rich was doing is in effect, making his money work for him. He was sending it ahead in to the future to start slaving for him and create a nice nest by the time he gets there himself. The banks of today do the same, they just use your money for it, not theirs. And of course, they will tell you that you should leave that to "experts", you just go and slave for that dollar. The more you slave, the more demanding this dollar is. So soon, you have no time left to do anything except slave. No time for family, self improvement, self grooming, fun, nothing, just slavery. And the worst yet is, you have no knowledge of what your master (dollar) and its mentor (the banks) are doing and when and if there is a profit and how much... The experts know that, you just go and slave. The experts also know when are they going to belly up... The bad news here is, you have no control when and if you can stop, its just as if you were led by the Pied Piper and you just follow with the masses.
All said to date may not make much sense if there was no solution for the problem. So what is it..?
